Inside & Out is an investment banking insight event for 1st and 2nd year lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans* undergraduates of all degree disciplines (i.e. finishing studies in 2019 and 2020).

A career in investment banking is highly competitive and extremely challenging, so it’s important that you have a strong academic background. If you are to attend, you should have achieved good grades at A-level (300+ UCAS points from top 3 A Levels or equivalent). Of course we will take any mitigating circumstances you provide into account. Because of the wide range of careers we offer, we welcome applications from all degree disciplines, so you don’t have to be studying a traditional finance-related subject to apply. What you will need is a real desire to find out all you can about the industry, as well as the wide range of intern and full-time opportunities on offer.

The event will take place in September 2017 in Central London (travel expenses will be reimbursed).

Reasonable travel expenses within the UK will be reimbursed.

Year Attended Inside & Out: 2015

University and Course Studied: Studying for an MBA at London Business School

Which bank you completed an internship with: Citi (Summer)

Why did you find Inside & Out useful? It was amazing to meet seniors from all the top banks, hear how they leverage their authenticity at work and assess the distinctive cultures of the banks attending

Year Attended Inside & Out: 2012

University and Course Studied: Banking and International Finance at Cass Business School

Which bank you completed an internship with: J.P. Morgan (Summer & Graduate)

Why did you find Inside & Out useful? The diversity of thought in the LGBT community is its biggest strength. Attending the event allowed me to extend my network to draw on that pool of talents and opinions.

Year Attended Inside & Out: 2011

University and Course Studied: Management at London School of Economics

Which bank you completed an internship with: Citi (Spring), Deutsche Bank (Spring & Summer) and Morgan Stanley (Spring)

Why did you find Inside & Out useful? I realised that I am not alone in being gay in banking. It was very enlightening hearing senior bankers discuss their experiences, and most particularly how much the attitude towards LGBT has changed over the past few decades. This helps me appreciate how fortunate I am to be born in an area where I can comfortably be myself at work.

Myths vs reality & FAQs

Many people assume that investment banking is predominantly white, male, middle class and heterosexual. That may have been true in the past, but it’s far from the case today. In fact, because the investment banking industry is an intensely performance-focused environment, people are judged very much on what they do, rather than where they come from or who they are. This makes for a surprisingly diverse workforce not just in terms of sexuality, but also in terms of gender, race and background.

Another common myth is that investment banking is a cutthroat, ruthless industry where individuals can expect very little support. This assumption doesn’t take into account that high performance requires respect and collaboration. The most important asset for an investment bank is the talent they have, so recognising diversity and fostering an inclusive culture is actually a business-critical issue for all banks.
