To apply for an internship position with Nomura in 2021, candidates should be available for full time employment by July 2021 or 2022.
The recruitment process for the graduate programme consists of three first round interviews (two competency interviews and one case study interview) with junior representatives. Inside & Out is a virtual investment banking insight event for LGBTQ+ of all degree disciplines finishing studies in 2022 and 2023.
A career in investment banking is highly competitive and extremely challenging, so it’s important that you have a strong academic background. If you are to attend, you should be in your first or second year of university and identify as LGBTQ+. Because of the wide range of careers we offer, we welcome applications from all degree disciplines, so you don’t have to be studying a traditional finance-related subject to apply. What you will need is a real desire to find out all you can about the industry, as well as the wide range of intern and full-time opportunities on offer.
The event will take place virtually on Friday 16th October.

Year Attended Inside & Out: 2011
University and Course Studied: Management at London School of Economics
Which bank you completed an internship with: Citi (Spring), Deutsche Bank (Spring & Summer) and Morgan Stanley (Spring)
Why did you find Inside & Out useful? I realised that I am not alone in being gay in banking. It was very enlightening hearing senior bankers discuss their experiences, and most particularly how much the attitude towards LGBT has changed over the past few decades. This helps me appreciate how fortunate I am to be born in an area where I can comfortably be myself at work.
If you’re keen to attend, please do so by filling out the form below.
If you have any questions at all, simply email firstname.lastname@example.org
Collecting and protecting your data:
Inside and Out is organised by our parent company Stafford Long & Partners. In the run up to the event, we’ll be collecting certain data about the people attending. Below is a brief outline of why we need that data and what we do with it when we have it.
There are also a few options for you to decide what data you share with us. If you feel comfortable doing so, we’d really appreciate it as it helps us focus our diversity effort to ensure we engage with under-represented groups and a wider pool of talent.
When you apply, your CV and covering letter will be viewed and stored by our Diversity Solutions team. Firstly, so we can see if Inside and Out is the right event for you. And secondly, so we can let you know if your application has been successful.
If we offer you a place at the event and you agree to attend, we’ll need to share your CV, contact details and any dietary or accessibility requirements with the participating companies so they know who’s attending on the day. It’s also so they can let you know about future career opportunities that might be of interest.
The participating firms are:
• Goldman Sachs
• Morgan Stanley
• Royal Bank of Canada
To help us understand how well we’re attracting different demographics of students, we may ask for more details about your ethnicity, sexual orientation and any disabilities you consider yourself to have.
If you’d rather not share this information, that’s absolutely fine. Simply tick the ‘prefer not to say’ box in the relevant sections. But rest assured, anything you do tell us will stored and processed anonymously, and won’t form part of your application.
We’d also love to keep you posted about other events that might be of interest. So make sure you tick the box that says you’re happy for us to stay in touch.
All of the banks profiled on this site have LGBT employee networks, and recognise the value they add to a diverse workforce. In general, such networks can provide development and mentoring opportunities, as well as organising great social events and activities. They offer a chance to mix with fellow employees from all levels, allowing you to build connections right across the business. They also serve as the voice of the LGBT population and can help drive change and shape policy.
That is entirely up to you. Some people are more comfortable being ‘out’ than others – it’s a decision only you can make. You can mention your sexuality on the application form, during interviews or after an offer has been made, or you may decide that you’re not prepared to discuss your personal life at work.
The choice is yours.
Although knowledge of finance is not essential for many careers within investment banking, you will need to demonstrate a genuine interest in, and motivation for, the area that you are applying for. Most banks run intensive formal training schemes tailored to the needs of each business area, which ensure every graduate joiner has the required skills to be successful in their roles.
Banks typically look for people who combine a mix of skills and aptitudes, and who can contribute to a culture of teamwork and achievement. You will need an excellent record of personal accomplishment, along with impressive academic credentials. Most programmes will require you to have a 2:1 or above in any academic discipline.
There is no preference shown to graduates from specific universities – banks recruit talented people from universities across the UK and internationally.
The investment banking industry is constantly evolving because our clients are constantly evolving. With that change, comes enormous opportunity for both personal and professional development and mobility. Opportunities won’t necessarily come to you – it’s up to you to seek them out. The global nature of investment banking will offer those opportunities.
All participating banks in Inside and Out continue to recruit a large number of interns on to their 1st and 2nd year programmes. A large amount of interns hired are then converted on to their full time programmes.
Most unsuccessful applications for a place on an internship or graduate scheme are due to a candidate’s inability to demonstrate commercial awareness, knowledge of, and motivation for, the investment banking industry. Candidates are expected to show evidence that they’re right for the sector through their studies, work experiences or interests. Coming along to an event like this will put you in good stead and is something you can add to your CV.
